The biggest night in country music was this week!! The 39th Annual CMA awards aired on November 15th and for the first time ever, they were held in New York City instead of Nashville. Here are some of the results, for more details check out the CMT coverage of the CMA’s.Entertainer of the Year
WINNER: KEITH URBAN
Other Nominees: Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, and Brad Paisley
I definitely think Keith Urban deserved to win this award. If you haven’t been able to tell from my previous posts, I am a huge Keith Urban fan. Every song he makes is a hit, not to mention he’s gorgeous. I did think it was interesting that there were no female nominee’s though.
Female Vocalist of the Year
WINNER: GRETCHEN WILSON
Other Nominees: Sara Evans, Alison Krauss, Martina McBride, and Lee Ann Womack
In my opinion there wasn’t really a competition here. Gretchen is a much more prominent country singer than the other nominees. Although they all have great songs, Gretchen’s are better known. Sara Evans would probably come in second.
Male Vocalist of the Year
WINNER: KEITH URBAN
Other Nominees: Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, George Strait, and Brad Paisley
Keith Urban did really well this year! It is tough competition between these four though, and I think Toby Keith should have still been in the running over George Strait.
Horizon Award
WINNER: DIERKS BENTLEY
Other Nominees: Big and Rich, Miranda Lambert, Julie Roberts, Sugarland
I couldn’t find out exactly what this award was for, but I’m guessing it has something to do with being new in the country music industry. I think Dierks Bentley deserved to win the award because in his few years starting out he has come out with at least 4 hot songs. Big and Rich and Sugarland are also great new groups to watch out for.
Vocal Group of the Year
WINNER: RASCAL FLATTS
Other Nominees: Alison Krauss & Union Station Featuring Jerry Douglas, Diamond Rio, Lonestar, and Sugarland
The other nominees can’t even compare to the talent that Rascal Flatts has. They definitely deserved this one.
Vocal Duo of the Year
WINNER: BROOKS AND DUNN
Other Nominees: Big and Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Van Zant, and the Warren Brothers
Other Awards:
Single of the Year: “I May Hate Myself in the Morning” by Lee Ann Womack
Album of the Year: There’s More Where That Came From – Lee Ann Womack
Song of the Year: “Whiskey Lullaby” written by Bill Anderson and Jon Randall
Music Video of the Year: “As Good as I Once Was” by Toby Keith

I unfortunately missed the Country Music Awards on November 15. I was very happy with all the winners; however, I feel Sugarland should have gotten an award. It was her song, “Love your Baby girl” that turned me on to country music. Keith Urban and Gretchen Wilson are extremely talented arists and amazing performers who definitely deserved their awards. I wish I could have seen them perform. For the Vocal Duo category, I love Big and Rich! I think they should have won! Their songs, “Comin’ to your City” and “Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy” are phenomenal! Those are the songs that I sing at the top of my lungs in the shower for all my roommates to hear!
Im pretty upset Billy Ray Cyrus wasnt up for any awards.
But on a serious note, i saw some clips from the CMAS on the show the best week ever on VH1. I gotta admit, they looked pretty hype. Looks like you hicks really know how to have a good time. Its a good call to make a show with a lot of performances. Im sure that it almost felt like one big concert Thats definetly a good thing.
Anyway, I still havent really gotten hooked to the new wave of country music yet. Sorry Abby, I just never found the patience. Im old school. Gimme some Billy Ray and a doob and I'll be in my happy place. Wouldnt y'all agree with that? thats what lifes all about. Later y'all.
There are so many big names in country music. I agree, Keith Urban is very deserving of awards...he is great.
I heard on some show that people were getting acres of land on the moon as gifts at some award show...does anyone know if A) this is even true, and B) if it was for the CMAs?
I dont know if I just got more into country this year, or if there really were alot more new artists. I feel like a ton of people popped up this year, either that werent famous before even if they had songs, or didnt have any records whatsoever.
Hooray for country music and hooray for the end of blogging. Happy Thanksgiving to alllllll.
Even though I know Dierks Bentley's little brother think that big and rich should have won the Horizon Award, I like them the best in country music so i guess i'm a little bit baised. I feel like big and rich has their crowd into the music a little more and makes there music scene turn into a party. I think music is all about the energy and the emotion that it evokes in its listeners, the more energy or emotion, the more the music will sell. 'Save a horse Ride a Cowboy' was the first country song that i actually sought out on limewire or a CD store so i think that they will attract a lot of other listeners who are not traditionally country music fans, like myself. Thanks for the CMA's update.
Like Jackie, I missed the awards to, but got caught up on what took place there by reading your blog the next day. I really enjoyed reading your posts and I think nailed a topic that some were scared to uncover. Keith Urban did have an awesome year, but I'm surprised that he won entertainer and male vocalist of the year. That is a pretty amazing achievement. Gretchen is gonna be successful for years to come, as well as Dierks. I think you're probably right about what the horizon award is for. Dierks is relatively new so that award sounds like it would fit. I don't know about Rascal Flatts though. They produce some seriously huge hits, but they just seem really metro to me. I still listen to them, but watching the videos I feel like they are country's backstreet boys. Anyways, congrats to all that won and for the success you've had with your blog.
I LOVED THE CMA's. Unfortunately I had a volleyball game and tuned in a little late. As you know by now my favorite singer is Brad Paisley. I am upset because I think that he performed and I missed it. Do you know what song he performed? As long as he didn't sing "The World" my current favorite song of his, I think that I will survive.
One performance that I did catch was Faith Hill and Time McGraw singing "Like We Never Loved At All". First of all, Faith Hill is gorgeous. She looks amazing and her voice is so powerful. I really don't think I blinked the whole performance. I love that song. I think that it is going to go down as one of the great duets in country history. Maybe I am being a little over zealous but I really love that song.
One last thing, the Billy Joel and Dolly Parton duet wasn't that great. I think that their was something wrong with her microphone. What do you think about how she looks? I think she is kind of scary looking. I guess I never realized how fake she looks. WEIRD!
i love this post- i was unable to watch the show, so thanks for the recap-
Keith Urban deserves all of the awards that he receives. He was up against some great competition, but he deserved to win. i think that hands down he is better than Toby Keith and Brad Paisley. Kenny Chesney was a close one though :)
Gretchen is also worthy of her awards. Redneck Woman has taken the world by storm and increased her popularity ten fold. GREAT performer!
I unfortunately missed the whole, but I was able to catch some parts, for the most part they consisted of performances, all of which were great of course. There is just something about country music that is peaceful and you do not mind sitting in front of the tv for hours listening and watching, well at least I wouldn’t mind it if I had such leisure time. I agree with Jackie as far as Sugarland goes though, “Love Your Baby Girl” is definitely one of my most favorite songs, my family says it reminds them of me, sorta.
I agree with your song choices, they are all very good picks from my point of view. I think overall you usually can’t go wrong with many country songs, some can tend to be more twangy than others and that I can live without though. But you had some good picks, my list might of included probably some more newer songs. Some of my favorites include: “Love Your Baby Girl,” “Some Beach,” “Whiskey Lullaby,” …. To only mention the first couple that come to mind, I could continue on with the list all night I suppose.
